“Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.” – Stephen Sondheim
“[KC] enjoys puzzles and manipulative games… [her least favorite activity is] messy painting. (She does not like getting dirty.)” – My pre-school teacher
My purpose as an artist is to identify what makes myself and others unique and express that self-image via humility and honesty. Trends get attention, but I think integrity and a sense of humor can handle the wear and tear of time and passing hashtags. Find the balance between the two is what makes an individual, project, or a brand successful.
Many bio pages are often written in the third person. Don’t you find that strange? I can’t imagine anyone is truly comfortable typing about themselves saying, “Steve lives in Calpurnia with his wife and two Komodo dragons, Abbot and Costello.”
Anyway, I’m KC Ryan. I’m an artist, performer, and writer living in the heart of Austin, Texas. I have been pursuing a career in the visual and performing arts for most of my life, ever since watching a behind-the-scenes feature about Disney’s Aladdin and thinking, “Yes, I want to do that. All of that.” I’ve also spent most of my adult life surrounded by books in a professional capacity, which I am slowly sailing away from on the cruise line, the S.S. Creative Career Focus.
I received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, supplemented with minor studies in Mass Communication. I’m of the mind that Theatre is the most underrated of the arts programs. While it would be nice to have the resume of Meryl Streep, students learned skills that transferred easily between producing a play and running a business: research, managing schedules, beating the clock before a deadline hits, problem-solving, and empathizing with a client. It is also one of the few curriculums that builds upon the ideas of mindfulness, vulnerability, and self-care. We were here first, Brene Brown!
I’m self-taught in illustration, visual arts, and graphic design. I currently do most of my work digitally via Procreate on the iPad Pro, allowing for the clean lines of most art programs yet connecting to the muscle memory built in from the days when I was first learning to draw Disney characters in my spiral notebook. I am also currently teaching myself calligraphy and hand-lettering because sometimes typography does not have the same “umph” as a handwritten script.
